Canneto di Caronia is the name of a tiny village on Sicily thats been drawing fire lately, not just in paranormal circles, but from major newswires as well. Last January, spontaneous blazes began breaking out in homes and businesses, causing electrical devices of all sorts to combust.
Although there are only about 20 homes in Canneto di Caronia, at least half of them experienced the phenomena, causing most of the 39 inhabitants to flee these demon fires, which were originally blamed on that tricksey Ol Satan.
The empty village was quickly overrun by scientists, engineers, religious and paranormal experts, all trying to find, depending on their vocations, a rational or irrational explanation for the anomalous blazes.
No spontaneous human combustion has been reported, though considering the volatile mix of experts on the scene, this is rather surprising. But fear not theres another anomaly, one even hotter than SHC.
The fires have continued, even after the villages power supply was shut off. Even after things are unplugged, evidently.
The blazes began in mid-January, blasting fuse boxes, appliances and computers into spontaneously combustion. They died down for a while, but reflared to near-daily occurrences a few weeks later.
According to the mayor of Canneto di Caronia, no scientists have been able to come up with a cause, though they have plenty of theories ranging from build-ups of electrical energy relating to a nearby railway, to an unusual natural phenomena that causes the earth to emit surges of electricity.
One of the Catholic Churchs most noted exorcists, one Gabriele Amorth, still suspects Old Scratch, saying hes seen the devil possess electrical appliances like blenders and microwave ovens on previous occasions. Meanwhile the head honcho of an organization called the Committee for the Control of Paranormal Claims discounts demons, or even lowly poltergeists as the cause. The organization has released a statement saying that the fact that the phenomenon occurs only when there are people present makes it hard to believe that it is a natural, or even supernatural phenomenon.
That statement blew out your wordsmithys brain since it sounds more like something a certain befuddled president would say than a paranormal expert. Hmm. Do you suppose hes moonlighting?
The current fires are not the first incident in the village, or in other places. Fire up your browser and check out the links below for the complete stories of Canneto di Caronia and other flaming villages.
